A Dining Room Worth a Second Look
The first thing you notice when you step inside is how calm it feels. The noise of U.S. 301 fades away, and you find yourself in a room that feels less like a restaurant and more like a beloved relative's dining room on a Sunday afternoon.
Take a moment before you sit down, because the décor rewards a closer look. Framed photographs and vintage pieces line the walls, many of them provided by the owners and donated by locals over the years. The tables are set with care, draped in vintage lace, and arranged as if someone has been expecting you. It's the kind of setting that makes a weeknight dinner feel like an occasion.
What We Ordered
Voodoo Mac and Cheese
I went with the Voodoo Mac & Cheese, and I'm so glad I did. It's the kind of dish that reminds you why mac and cheese earned its place at the center of the Southern table: rich, generous and deeply satisfying. The menu describes the dish as, “Mac & Cheese topped with pulled pork, cheddar jack cheese, onion tanglers & sweet BBQ sauce.”
Chicken and Waffles
Cecile ordered the chicken and waffles, that beloved sweet-and-savory pairing that never seems to go out of style. One look across the table told me she had made an excellent choice. The menu describes the dish as, “Large tender chicken strips piled high with buttermilk waffles & served with the best buttermilk syrup you ever had & a side of country cream gravy.”
The full menu leans proudly Southern, with salads, sandwiches and entrées like low country shrimp and grits and smoked meats. The kitchen's guiding motto sums it up well: everything is served "As Southern As Possible."
Service With Southern Grace
Our server was pleasant and attentive without ever hurrying us along, which is exactly what you want when the conversation is flowing. Sweet tea glasses stayed full, plates arrived warm, and we never once felt rushed out the door. For two friends trading ideas over dinner, that kind of easy hospitality matters.
A Family Kitchen With Deep Florida Roots
The warmth you feel at the Cotillion comes straight from its owner. Kathi Hall Vincent, known to everyone as Miz Kathi, is a ninth-generation Floridian who spent years cooking for her six children and catering on the side before opening the cafe in 2008. The story goes that her husband spotted a "for rent" sign on the weathered old bank building on Main Street, and the rest is Wildwood history.
Dinner Inside a 1908 Bank
That building is part of what makes a meal here so special. Before it served biscuits and comfort food, it was the Bank of Wildwood, which opened its doors in October 1908. Look to the left of the front door and you'll find a historical marker, placed in 2022, noting that the modest Greek Revival building is believed to be the oldest surviving commercial building in downtown Wildwood.
It's a lovely thing to think about while you eat: more than a century ago, Wildwood residents walked through this same doorway to do their banking. Today they come for Southern cooking and good company. (Curious about the full story? Read our companion piece on the history of the Bank of Wildwood.)
Save Room, or Stop Next Door
Miz Kathi's Southern Sweetery sits just steps away at 105 N. Main Street, with a long display of made-from-scratch cakes, pies and seasonal treats. The Cotillion also offers a small retail shop with house seasonings and cookbooks, and the Magnolia Room can be reserved for private gatherings.
The Verdict
Miz Kathi's Cotillion Southern Cafe is the kind of place Wildwood is lucky to have: a family-run kitchen, a dining room full of character and a building that holds a piece of the city's story. Come hungry, bring someone you love talking with, and give yourself time to look around. You may find, as we did, that dinner turns into an evening.
